A whopping 30 percent of the city’s public school children do not speak English as their first language. Spanish is by far the most common language among the foreign-born school children, but Arabic and Somali are numbers two and four respectively. There are now over 120 languages spoken in the Nashville school district, nearly as many as in New York City. Thanks to refugee resettlement over the past decade, Tennessee is one of the fastest-growing states for non-English speakers.
